When talking about the exterior of the 2026 Volkswagen ID.ERA 9X, the most eye-catching aspect is undoubtedly its “harmony of square and circle” design philosophy. Instead of mechanically stacking elements, it blends the sharp, structured lines that German industrial design excels at with the rounded, balanced aesthetics found in Eastern philosophy. At first glance, it already delivers a strong sense of premium quality.

At the front, the visual centerpiece is clearly the full-width “light wing” LED strip combined with the illuminated VW emblem. When lit up at night, the light strip spreads out like a galaxy, creating an extremely high level of recognition—making the vehicle instantly identifiable even in heavy traffic.

The split headlight design is also thoughtfully executed. The rectangular LED daytime running lights are clean and sharp, paired with matrix headlights that maintain the technological feel expected of a new energy vehicle while preserving Volkswagen’s classic design identity, avoiding any sense of inconsistency. The active front grille is not just for show—it can automatically open and close depending on driving conditions, providing efficient cooling when needed and reducing drag when possible, balancing practicality and energy efficiency rather than being purely decorative.

The side profile is arguably the most memorable part of the car. Designers adopted a golden ratio with a 4:1 wheelbase-to-axle proportion and a 2.5:1 wheel height ratio, giving the body a long and elegant appearance without any sense of bulkiness. The floating roof is achieved through blacked-out A, B, C, and D pillars, and together with the hidden door handles, the body lines become much smoother while also reducing aerodynamic drag—both stylish and functional.

The three key character lines are the finishing touch: a sharp shoulder line running from front to rear, a slightly descending roofline that adds a hint of sportiness, and an upward-sweeping lower body line that brings a sense of strength. Together, they create a full-bodied and powerful silhouette. The 21-inch aerodynamic wheels feature a low-drag design, offering strong visual impact while also improving energy efficiency in real-world driving.

The rear design echoes the front nicely, continuing the “square and circle” concept. The narrower top and wider bottom shape aligns with the Eastern aesthetic preference for stability, giving the car a solid and grounded look. The full-width taillights feature a “concentric circle” internal structure, and when illuminated, the light spreads outward like ripples, creating a refined visual effect that complements the front light strip perfectly.

The dual-peak rear spoiler above the tailgate is not just decorative—it genuinely improves aerodynamic performance while adding a sporty touch, preventing the rear from looking too plain. The rear bumper adopts a sculpted, three-dimensional design, complemented by a refined chrome trim strip, creating a layered yet clean and elegant appearance. A particularly thoughtful detail is the blue indicator light for the intelligent driving assistance system, which is seamlessly integrated into the taillight assembly—enhancing the sense of technology without adding unnecessary elements.

Stepping inside, the attention to detail of the ID.ERA 9X becomes immediately apparent. Built around the concept of “German functional aesthetics + Eastern spatial philosophy,” the wraparound luxury cabin provides a strong sense of enclosure without feeling oppressive. The center console features a “layered floating” design with a clean layout and minimal physical buttons, giving it a very tidy and modern look. The 15.6-inch ultra-HD dual screen for both driver and front passenger is highly responsive and delivers excellent clarity, greatly enhancing the technological atmosphere.

The innovative SmartSurface interactive display makes operation extremely convenient—there’s no need to look down for buttons, and everyday adjustments like climate control and navigation become intuitive and effortless, significantly improving the overall user experience. Space is one of the car’s core strengths, with a “2+2+2 six-seat layout that truly achieves “equal comfort for all six seats,” ensuring no row feels like an afterthought. The 3070 mm long wheelbase provides ample room for every passenger.
